Flying Down the Rabbit Hole

V103

P r o l o g

As a child, I could never have imagined that I would one day be swept into a great
war, one that would leave an indelible mark on my life and claim the lives of an
estimated 1.3 million people. Those early years were filled with innocence and
dreams, untouched by the shadows of conflict. Yet, as time unfolded, the world
changed, and so did I. Watching as history repeats its unhealthy hunger for control
and ideological and religious reasons.

The indelible remnants of any war remain profound and far-reaching, The Why
comes to mind as we remember all of my fellow brothers in arms, many of which
do come home. All wars split the nation’s conscience, tear apart families,
ideologies, alter communities, and reshape our understanding of the world in so
many twisted ways. The experiences we endured, the loss, the camaraderie, the
resilience, became etched into our collective memory. Even now, the echoes of that
time linger, a somber reminder of the cost of conflict and the strength found in
unity. I wrote this memoir partially for those that understand what a war does to
your soul, it’s forever seeing those people and the memories even if they are here
now or gone in just a second of time. Some humanity we dream of but not always
for all.

Reflecting on those days, I am reminded of the fragility of peace and the
importance of remembering our past hopefully gaining strength from the lessons
learnt and those that were lost. That war was a defining chapter in my life, one that
taught me the value of perseverance, the pain of loss, and the enduring hope for a
better future. Reading this memoir even if you were not a veteran of the
Vietnamese catastrophe, possibly serving in others. I hope that you will find these
words striving to overcome the scars that remain inside all of us. You are not alone.
The innocence of youth lost, through the horrors of war witnessing the healing of
the deepest scars whatever field of human struggle, I am filled with a profound
sense of reverence. The journey has been demanding, marked by loss and hardship,
but also by resilience, innovation, and hope. As we stand on the cusp of new
frontiers, may we carry forward the lessons of the past, guided by wisdom and
compassion, to shape a future that honors the sacrifices of those who came before
us.

I am filled with a profound sense of humility. In the field of human endeavor, the
most powerful and poignant feelings are laid to rest, but it seems not forever, I
want to talk through why humans are such creatures of conflict. The massive rift
between what is carried forward as lessons in our life’s journey, sometimes guided
by wisdom and compassion. Shaping a future that takes each living breath, we can
honor the sacrifices of those that came before us.

Flying above the hostiles was not a perfect place to be but way better than the
hellfire below. I can tell you it taught a young man the importance of unity,
compassion for those that survived and served one of the greatest nations on earth.
It is my hope that we embrace the responsibly, ensuring it serves to unite us and
build a more compassionate world for future generations inured with a deep desire
for a destiny of peace for all humanity.
